Bathrooms and why on earth would I be writing about ones that provide accessibility options? I know that is a question you’re asking yourself and to be honest I’m vaguely asking myself too. It’s something I’ve thought about on and off since I had my surgery and if you’ve read my personal injury post or if you’re read some of my other health related posts then you’ll know that my health isn’t the way it should be (whatever that actually is) for a woman of my age. I feel like I’m *whisper it* 32 in an 80-year-olds body and what’s worrying is I’ve seen OAP’s that are healthier and fitter than I am.
This is where the bathroom bit comes in. It’s not just my head, stomach and knees that have issues. There’s also my back that on regular occasions decides not to cooperate and then because I’m over compensating for that my hips and knees decide to join the party. I’ll be honest and say that while in comparison to others I am fairly mobile and can get around I do have days where my body just refuses to work for me. Going to university is a prime example and lots of stairs do not help me especially when it’s so cold. A hot shower works miracles on the days I can manage to hobble my way in. It’s at this point I’m grateful for everything being on one level and the fact we got rid of the bath in this house over 20 years ago.
A bath sounds like bliss but in reality is just another torture device that I can’t get in or out of. This also includes hotel showers that are in baths and have meant that I have to book an accessible room in some hotel chains just so that I can have a shower.
Recently I’ve been looking at walk-in baths and the features they offer in comparison to having just a shower in the bathroom. After what feels like a horribly long story and maybe more of my medical history than is truly necessary for a blog post a walk in bath is definitely something I will be considering if my body deteriorates any further. I’m staying positive by saying if rather than when although I may as well face the fact that I don’t think it’ll get any better and I just have to live with it.
What changes would you make to your bathroom?
