I know I’ve not mentioned it much (ha I always mention I love tea, especially my tea masterclass with T2) but I also love a really good afternoon tea. I blame one of my grandmother’s for this and the other one I can quite honestly blame for my need to have something to eat when I have a cup of tea. I really can be described as a Hobbit or Winnie the Pooh – depending on which literally reference I feel like that day – and I attribute this to my love of afternoon tea.
I was approached by Glasgow’s Leading Attractions*and asked if I would like to visit the places in Glasgow that I would recommend to anyone that visits the city. I had a nosy on the website for the places they would suggest and after scrolling past the shopping centre that I work in, I settled for the Willow Tea Rooms on Buchanan Street. The tea rooms have been modeled on the works of Charles Rennie MacKintosh and Miss Cranston’s tea rooms. There are classic designs used from the logo on merchandise and the napkins to the light fittings and the high backed chairs that can only be associated with Charles Rennie MacKintosh.
I’ve been to the tea rooms before but with other people so it was nice to go with my mum and my husband this time. We went on a Saturday afternoon and even with a booking, we needed to wait for a table to be free. If you think it’s going to be busy when you’re planning on going then make a booking so that you’re guaranteed a table, especially if it’s for more than 2 people.
Once we were seated we ordered our drinks and cakes – with me opting for tea (obviously). I chose the Scottish Breakfast and I’m glad I did as it was a nice accompaniment to the sandwiches.
All the elements of the afternoon tea went down a treat for all three of us especially the shortbread – I’m tempted to go back and see if I can find some for a Christmas present or two. Overall, we left our afternoon tea feeling very full and if I’m honest the only thing I would change is going for it at an earlier time so that I would be able to fit in more of an evening meal later that day.
