How To – Create Categories Within Blogger

This post was a request from a loyal reader and as always I am happy to oblige. One of my previous how-to posts concentrated on using pages within blogger and this post is sort of an extension of that, in that this is how to create categories for your posts and have them display on your menu bar with that category name.

The first thing you need to learn is that within blogger, categories are actually referred to as ‘labels’ – yes that option over there on the right-hand side. Within that, you can create a label for any of your posts and then use that label to create a page. With me so far??

The labels I use directly reflect the main topic of the post. My current ones are: books, can’t live without, reviews and how-to.
Now onto the slightly tricky bit – adding them to your pages menu. In layout either open your menu option (if you have one) or add a gadget and then chose Pages from the options available.
The bit you need to know is you are adding it as an external page, so click that and then it will give you text boxes to fill in. One is the title of the page you would like to show up on your blog, e.g. Books or Beauty. The next one is the web address clicking on that option will take you to. This is the relatively straightforward bit. The URL is basically your blog url/search/label/books (for example).
So for the books label on my blog, it is http://fromfiona.com/search/label/books and this can be repeated for any number of links you want (so long as they have a corresponding label) for your menu.
I hope that little explanation helped and if you need any other blog help you can find all my how to posts in one place. What other topics would you like me to cover?
