How I’m Making More Sustainable Choices*

With everybody making changes to be more environmentally friendly and make the world a better place I thought I would document what I’m doing too. I do want to say I’m not making many radical changes and they’re all really simple things that you can do too.

This is a sponsored post but all views and opinions are my own. Sponsored link is marked with an *. All others are because I love them!

Storage Jars and Tins

We’ve started getting into the habit of buying in bulk and decanting into jars in the pantry. This means we’re actually keeping better track of what we have and it’s keeping our staples such as sugar and flour fresher for longer. IKEA is fab for affordable jars, glass storage tubs with lids and general home storage.

Reusable water and hot drinks cups

This is where I’ve been having issues recently. The branch I work in has no running water but we’re in a large shopping centre so that’s not too much of a problem. But I end up buying bottles of water and cups of tea in single use cups.

That was until I found the brand Frank Green via Rhianna’s Instagram and I’m converted. I will admit that both of the bottles/cups I have are plastic but if I use them until they eventually wear out then not only is good for the environment but I’ll have got my moneys worth too – said like a true Scot! They do sell stainless steel bottles and cups which I’ve looked at but in the words of my bestie AJ “I don’t want my water to taste of pennies” or worse drought Peroni!

Leftovers

When it comes to re-using leftovers the freezer is your friend. We often have portions of meals left (our family only knows how to cook for an army) so we pop them in containers and save them in the freezer. They come in handy if only one person is eating or if I need a nutritious meal to take to work with me.

We batch freeze things like soup and sauces which can be taken out, defrosted and then turned into a meal. My favourite is lasagne made with leftover bolognese sauce. We’ve even been known to blitz up leftover cauliflower cheese for the other layer of the lasagne.

Making more sustainable choices is something I’m really working on this year. Unfortunately, due to various reasons I can’t change all of my skincare or my diet but I can do my bit for this planet. If we all make small changes then things will get better.

Changes around the house

This is a big pet hate of mine anyway but I’m working on not leaving my TV on when I go for a shower or making sure it’s actually off when I turn it off. Other little things like unplugging my phone when it’s done charging and turning lights off when I don’t need them are all small changes that can make a difference.

I’m also looking at which laundry brands I can change too. Connor and Elyse have a fab post about Smol which I’ll be checking out soon.

Replacing your boiler can also make a difference in the amount of emissions you create. Older models are less energy efficient than new models. Viessmann* have created a video all about this topic which explains the amount of coal being burnt globally when doing these activities.

What changes are you making to your daily life to be more sustainable?
