Student Temporary Car Insurance
If you are a student coming home from university for the holidays, you might want to borrow a car from a family member, and that is fine and enables you to get out and about. Still, before you grab the keys, you need to make sure you have covered yourself with the correct temporary insurance as this is a legal requirement.
What is Temporary Cover?
Temporary cover can be purchased when it doesn’t make sense to have a full premium. If you do not have access to a car at university or college and can only borrow one when you are home for the holidays paying a full annual policy can be really expensive and not helpful. Getting insurance as a young driver is costly as you are considered a higher risk, so paying for a week or a month cover will at least give your wallet a bit of a break. Legally you must have cover as a driver, and this will offer you protection against things that can get really expensive.
What Cover is Available?
You will find that temporary car insurance is offered on the same basis as standard polices. The cheapest cover is called Third-Party, but this only covers claims made against you by another person. You would not get any pay out to repair your vehicle or claim any legal expenses etc. for yourself. Third-Party, Fire and Theft works in much the same way but is slightly more expensive as it comes with the additional benefits of providing cover if the vehicle is stolen or involved in a fire. Finally, Fully Comprehensive is the highest level of protection offered and includes everything for you and your vehicle as well as a third-party assuming the claim is accepted. It is the preferred level of cover and includes things like cover against vandalism which you do not get with the other levels.
Benefits of Temporary Car Insurance
One of the main benefits for the owner of the car is the protection of their no claims bonuses if you do need to make a claim your policy is the one affected not theirs. It also means their car insurance policy is untouched in terms of price increases following claims as it will be nothing to do with them. It is the most flexible cover and can be bought for periods from a few hours up to a few weeks and has been designed with students in mind. As mentioned, this makes it more affordable as you will find premiums are high when you are a new younger driver as you have no experience on the roads so are considered a higher risk. You will need to make sure you have all your details with you when you apply, your driving licence, which must have been held for more than 12 months and have less than 8 penalty points. They will ask for details of the vehicle as well as the period of cover you require, and as with all insurance policies, you can shop around to get an idea of what is best. OneSure Insurance specialises in standard car insurance but you can speak to them about temporary insurance for your vehicle or about any insurance-related questions you may have.
