Why I love vintage jewellery
I love pieces of jewellery that have a story behind them and you definitely get that with vintage jewellery. My favourite piece is a silver and garnet ring (pictured below) that we found in the back of my grandmother’s wardrobe when clearing out her house after she died. What’s even funnier is with the size of the ring it would never have fitted her so we have no idea why it was there, who it was for or even who the original owner may have been. It’s great knowing there is a story that goes with the piece and even though I don’t wear it anymore (it’s very fragile) it’s a piece that I love.

Eventually, I’d like to be able to build up my collection of vintage jewellery but for now I’ll need to settle for lots of window shopping. If, however, you’re looking to buy then this is the guide you need.
Why Buy Vintage Emerald Jewellery?
Vintage emerald jewellery is a great investment. Not only are vintage emerald rings*, necklaces, and bracelets beautiful to behold, but this gemstone is also durable, easy to style, and rich in symbolic meaning. Read on to find out why vintage emerald jewellery should be your next investment.
Timeless beauty
Emeralds are known for their rich green colour and these gemstones are sure to catch attention. This gemstone is formed when the mineral beryl encounters chromium and vanadium impurities and these impurities are what brings out the bright green colour. The most impressive emeralds are usually found in Columbia and Brazil, with large gems from these regions being competitively sought after.
Whether you have the fortune to get your hands on a large Columbian emerald or a piece of jewellery featuring a smaller emerald that beautifully catches the light, emerald jewellery will always be an asset to your collection.
Symbolic meaning
As well as looking fabulous, emerald jewellery is rich with historic symbolism. Throughout the ages, emeralds have been associated with rejuvenation and new beginnings. Many have also believed these gemstones to possess magical healing powers. Good fortune and good health are thought to be bestowed upon anyone who wears emerald jewellery – if that’s not a convincing enough reason to add a piece to your collection, then I don’t know what is! Finally, emeralds are also considered to be calm, peaceful stones, that will bring the wearer a sense of clarity.
A good investment
In addition to how beautiful and meaningful emerald jewellery can be, these gemstones also make a worthwhile investment. With a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, emeralds are a particularly resilient and durable gemstone, which will mean that they’re less likely to get chipped and will retain their value.
The idea of investing in emeralds and other gemstones is nothing new. Since ancient Egyptian times, emeralds have been used as hedging in the face of inflation. Much later in the U.S, people used emeralds as investment pieces instead of keeping money in the bank as it was deemed a safer and more profitable way to store your assets.
Before choosing a type of gemstone to invest in, be sure to consider what kind of investment you’re looking for. While diamonds provide a reliable, safe investment, emeralds are the best option if you’re looking for a higher risk and higher reward. Emerald jewellery would be ideal if you’re looking for a short-term investment or a long-term investment with a high ROI.
Emerald buying guide
If you’ve decided to purchase a piece of emerald jewellery, the next step is knowing what to look out for when it comes to making your purchase. You should always consider key factors, including the colour, clarity, carat weight, and origin of an emerald. In addition, remember to always ask to see a certificate before purchasing. A certificate will let you know where the emerald was mined, and whether or not any enhancements or alterations have occurred to the natural stone.
There are so many reasons to make a piece of vintage emerald jewellery your next investment! Just remember to take your time while making a big purchase and know exactly what to look out for to ensure that you get the best quality jewellery piece for a competitive price.
