A few years ago I wrote a post all about my plans for learning to drive and how I was going to do it. Well, obviously 2020 happened and various other things just got in the way. At that point, the issue I was dealing with was having the confidence to even consider driving lessons. I was having a chat with a friend and realised that the issue for me isn’t confidence or anything else but the fear of failure and how much it will cost me. I have a feeling that this post will become a bit of a brain dump but sometimes they make the best posts. This post is also being written about the campaign #LearnerToDriver which has been designed to assist the drivers playing catch up after 2020 and getting them to pass their tests with flying colours. You can read the blog post about the campaign on the LeaseCarUK website which is a mine of information for drivers looking for a bit of assistance before their driving test.
This is a collaborative post but all views and opinions are my own.
One of the issues that’s become apparent to me as the years have gone on is the fact that once I’ve passed my test (whenever that may be) I will need to drive an automatic as the injury I sustained to my ankle means that I can’t drive a manual car for very long. Lots of painkillers and maybe an ice pack for after lessons in a manual car is an absolute must for me. The main issue is it’s my left ankle I injured which means clutch control is a bit of a problem for me but hopefully, with the right instructor, I’ll be able to get through it. The reason for having driving lessons in a manual and therefore getting a manual license is the fact it would mean I could drive a manual car if I need to for any reason.
The other big decision I’ve made even though I’ve not started the lessons yet is who I want to learn with. I think this is a very big choice to have to make and I’m do happy with who I’ve chosen. This instructor has been recommended to me and I think this is so important as it means they’ve been trusted by other people. I’ve tried lessons with a large company in the past and it really didn’t go well. The travel time for them to where I live was a big issue so this time I chose someone who lives in the same village which will help with that issue and mean that I should be able to do one hour at a time instead of two. This should also help the ankle and mean I can still walk after the lesson which was a very big problem in the past.
You might ask what’s holding me back if I’ve managed to get these big decisions out of the way and worked out what I want to do the only thing holding me back is how to pay for it all. So many other things that I need to save for before i can start driving lessons so I’ll let those people who had their learning disrupted get their lessons and tests done first but I’m sure I’ll start them at some point (this decade)!
