Once upon a time on a blog far far away, I used to describe myself as a book blogger and a reviewer of books. Then for some unknown reason I posting about books. Although I think I have an answer to why this happened. I was re-reading the same books on a regular basis. When I was completing uni work, the thought of reading a “new” book became a scary thought. What if I didn’t like it? What if I put it down to do something and then never picked it back up again?
This was a fairly constant issue for me until I realised that I should be sharing the books I love, why I love them what makes me go back to them constantly.
So now that I’ve rambled about where this post is going I can share my favourite books with you. Some are ones quite often referred to as classics and some you may never have heard of before and that’s ok but I’m hoping that you’ll give some of my choices a try. You never know you might find the next book you can’t be without.
Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling
I have a problem and it’s one I’ve been avoiding for a while. When I had the idea for this post, I knew that Harry Potter would feature, but the issue is that I found it too hard to narrow it down to one book. I just can’t do it. There are some books I prefer in the series over the others, but I’m unable to narrow it down to one text out of all of them. I feel they’re included to be read as a full set and that’s the way it will always be for me.
Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll
Of course, a post about my favourite books includes Alice in Wonderland. This will always be one of my favourite books, as given away by making sure I saw the statue when we went to New York in the summer. I also managed to get a picture of my favourite quote too. One of the things I love is the obscure nature of the story and maybe explains some of the other choices on this list. I also love the fact that the Disney movie (1951 original) is very true to the original story and has kept so many of the iconic lines and quotes intact.
War for the Oaks – Emma Bull
This book is an awesome mix of music and magic with lots of fae thrown in for good measure. I never tire of reading this book and it might explain why it’s starting to look a little dog-eared.
Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch
In the words of Diana Gabaldon ‘What would happen if Harry Potter grew up and joined the fuzz’. Also, what would happen if all the rivers of London had a human embodiment of them getting up to mischief. There’s magic, craziness and lots of geeky references which may explain my love for this series of books.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – Robert Louis Stevenson
I first read this book in my fifth year English class at school and it’s been one of my favourites ever since. This copy was a gift and I love it with all my being. I once spotted it in a bookshop, stroked it, looked at the price and then walked away as I just couldn’t justify it to myself. It’s a book I go back to regularly and if you’ve never tried it then you really should. It’s a piece of classic literature that will transport you to 19th Century London.
