Books I Keep Going Back To

Now for the eagle-eyed among you, you’ll notice that the books I keep going back to you are very similar to my favourite books. These are also titles that if I read them this year I won’t be including in reading challenge for this year as I would have been reading them anyway. It’s also to make it more of a challenge for me as I would have achieved it by my birthday. If you want to see how I’m getting on with my reading challenge for 2019 then you can on my Goodreads page.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones is the first in a series of books about Shadowhunters and was the first that introduced me to the intricate and well thought out world Cassandra has created. Since this book was released there have been more novels about these characters, a spin-off series (or potentially two) and a series of prequel books too.

If you’ve watched the Shadowhunters series on Netflix then these are the books that you need to be reading. This is one occasion where I can confidently say “the books were better” but the actors are very close to how I imagined all the characters in the books which helps.

War for the Oaks by Emma Bull

I first read War for the Oaks when I was a teenager and finding books that I enjoyed reading was a struggle. It turned out I hadn’t figured out which genres I preferred and it turns out that fantasy is what I prefer to read (no shock that the 3 books in this post are all fantasy then). This book has the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, a phouka and a music theme joining the whole lot together. It may be set in the 1980’s but it’s not important to the story, although it does explain the musical references within the text.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

I will never stop telling people how good I think this series of books is. If you love fantasy and books set in London then this is the book for you. It covers the magical side of the Metropolitan Police and gives me a good chuckle every time I write that. There’s also a dog called Toby and lots of magic lessons to keep you entertained.

There’s also a series of graphic novels with the same characters and although I’ve not read them, I would recommend that you do, as some of the stories are referenced in the books and it would make those references easier to understand.

So these are the books I keep going back to. Which ones do you re-read regularly?
